San Marino

San Marino has never participated with any type of contribution in UN peacekeeping operations. The UNOSES have financed UNICEF and UNAIDS’ projects for children in Gabon (UN-Monaco 2006a, par.1). They have contributed with $280,000 dlls (Ibid.).

Domestic economic environment
Tourism dominates the economy of the 61 square kilometer (23.6 square miles) republic, which plays host to more than three million visitors every year (BBC 2006ay, par. 5). Postage stamps and coins—keenly sought by collectors—are important sources of revenue (Ibid.). As one of Europe's tax havens, San Marino attracts a large inflow of cash from non-residents (Ibid.). The San Marino’s government does not need to seek employment for its citizens as peacekeepers. In 1999, San Marino joined the European Monetary Union (EMU), further strengthening its ties to the European Union (EU) (Ibid.).

Military affairs
The San Marino militia nominally consists of all able-bodied citizens between the ages of 16 and 55, but the armed forces actually maintained are principally for purposes of ceremonial display; these include the noble guard used in various functions (Thomson 2006t, par. 6). Therefore, San Marino cannot really contribute troops. And if San Marino decides to participate by sending some of its citizens as part of another contingent (the Italian, for example), it will be very difficult.

Foreign policy
Peacekeeping is not part of San Marino’s policy. The UNOSES have financed UNICEF and UNAIDS’ projects for children in Gabon (UN-Monaco 2006a, par. 4). They have contributed with $280,000 dlls (Ibid.). San Marino became a member of the UN on March 1992, and it belongs to several international organizations (Thomson 2006t, par. 8). San Marino sends its own delegation to the 35-nation Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe and is a member of the World Tourism Organization and the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (Ibid.).
